TYPES-OFTEN A RESULT OF A.D.

Patterson was a great admirer of cycle racing, particularly time trialling, when the rider competes against the clock and himself. This drawing produced in 1932 shows the racing man dressed in tights and alpaca jacket; the colour black, not a fashion statement, but a regulation imposed by the Road Time Trial Council the ruling authority of the sport, who demanded that competitors should be dressed as inconspicuously as possible – all in black! It was customary in those days for cyclists to greet each other on the road – even when racing.

GOOD TIMES COMING

A piece of artwork created for the cover of Cycling magazine; it was drawn during the winter of 1932 and shows the delights awaiting cyclists of both the touring and racing persuasion, in the coming days of summer. The tourist dressed in typical touring garb is enjoying a smoke whilst planning his route and the time trialist is getting information on his ‘minute- man’ from a club mate. Patterson once again shows his mastery of detail; the racing man is clad in black, with spare tubular tyre round his shoulders and a banana in his pocket. His bicycle has a fixed wheel and is fitted with a swan-neck handlebar extension, regulation bell and stopwatch.

RECORD BREAKER AT NIGHT

An untitled study in pen and wash, this example is in sepia and dated 1935. In this work Patterson shows his mastery in the handling of the medium, allowing the wash to run at different rates to create the foreground and background. The rider was definitely on a long distance attempt as he is carrying four feeding bottles!
